Our Lady of Perpetual Starch

Wood and other mixed media Iron: 35"w 75"h 42" d Girl: 38"w 72"l 3/4"h
I created this giant iron to stimulate thought and discussion about how and where people get their identities. The symbols on the iron suggest a mixture of DNA, our sex hormones, media, religion, family and the male gaze. The last concept comes to us from the study of art history. Most artists were men who created images of women through their own eyes: what they wanted/needed women to be? The same can be said today for the images we see on tv, movies and other media. If you're a man, these same influences tend to push and pull you in different directions as well. Finding one's sense of self can be a life-long quest. Are there other factors in life as well? Fate, for example? The iron above is made of wood with a few plastic parts. The girl is made of wood with artificial hair. The "electric" cord is rubber. The plug and receptacle are wood. The steam is a fog machine inside the iron. Thanks to my husband for the title!
